One of these projects uses an Element (or Elements) of Art effectively to create Emphasis. In turn that Emphasis is what makes this work of Art interesting and a more complete and fully realized as a work of art.
Write a statement about the effectiveness of the piece that you feel is the most successful and a statement about the piece that you feel is not as successful.
In that statement you should concentrate on the word "Effective"
1. Identify the Element (or Elements) of Art that are used. (Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture, Space) Speak to how that element is used EFFECTIVELY. - meaning , state how you see it being used and what that does to make the work more interesting. Giving an opinion as to how the use of an Element can lead you to an individual interpretation is a good way to show how you can judge the artists use of that element. Here is an example....
"It’s a joyful expression as the colors indicate, with berry-colored swishes, orange and fluorescent yellow drips and patches. Two large, dark blue shapes sprinkled with glitter push to the foreground driven by the powers unleashed in the brushwork."
2. (IN regards to the BETTER piece) How is that effective use of Elements directly resulting in the completeness or success of the finished piece. Here, offereing opinions of the most interesting or eye catching aspect of the piece is appropriate. Giving suggestions as to how the artist's decisions make this piece better than the other piece is also appropriate. What makes the better piece overall the more EFFECTIVE work of art.

I feel that the alligator sculpture is more effective than the less successful robot sculpture. I think that the alligator is effective because it uses the elements of art, specifically texture, to emphasize the object the sculpture is portraying. The alligator is made of up different pieces of plastic and metal. The medium used is consistent, and all the parts used compliment one another. Many of the metal and plastic pieces have a rough texture, the same of which a real alligator would have. The uses of texture is effective because it makes the sculpture seems life-like.
ReplyDeleteThe other sculpture, the robot, is made of various plastic pieces. While the artist chose to use similar pieces to each other, the parts he chose did not compliment his project. The parts are not consistent and seem to be kind of random. Instead of keeping your attention, the pieces of his project distract you and confuse the viewer. This causes the project to be not as effective.
In regards to the alligator, its texture allows for the project to seem complete. The rough texture of the nose and sharp texture of the keys to make teeth dramatize the idea that this sculpture is to be an alligator. The pieces of plastic and screws added to the alligator's head give detail and make the sculpture seem life-like. This is the better piece of art when compared to the robot because the texture details allow for the viewer to see the sculpture as a real-life object.

The alligator project uses the Element of Art, Shape, effectively to create Emphasis. The shape of the alligator’s eyes and teeth are most effective to making the work more interesting. They are effective because the jaggedness of the teeth and the roundness of the eyes contrast each other which creates Emphasis on the most fascinating and eye catching assets of the alligator. Another Element of Art used in this project is Color. The entire alligator is a variety of murky colors, except for its eyes. The alligator’s eyes pop out at you just like they would in real life. The effectiveness of the color of the alligator’s eyes emphasizes the realistic side of the project. The part of this sculpture that was least effective was the material used for the top of the alligator’s long snout and behind the eyes. I feel that a bigger piece of plastic/metal could have been used instead of many smaller ones. The smaller pieces were a little distracting and took away from the eyes and mouth which highlighted the project.
ReplyDeleteThe robot project was less effective than the alligator project because the alligator project emphasized Shape and Color in a more effective way. The parts of the robot project that were not successful were the items used to construct it. There is not a constant material used, but many random parts placed into random spots. The pieces look thrown together because better parts could not be found. For example, one arm is built out of erector set pieces and the other arm is part of a miniature construction piece. Also, one foot is a grey plastic object and the other foot is a keyboard mouse. The variation is confusing. This project could have been more effective if the arms were the same and the legs were the same. The Element of Art effectively being used is Space. Space is being used effectively by the limbs of the robot. The arms and the head are farther away from the solid torso of the robot. The space around the arms and head is most effective because it emphasizes that robots are very rigid, erect, and calculated.
The more effective project (alligator) is effective because the jaggedness of the teeth and the roundness of the eyes contrast each other which creates Emphasis on the most fascinating and eye catching assets of the alligator. The use of the element of Shape is directly resulting in the success of the finished piece. Another contributing factor would be the element of Color. The alligator’s eyes pop out at you just like they would in real life. The effectiveness of the color of the alligator’s eyes emphasizes the realistic side of the project. The combination of Color and Shape contribute to the overall effectiveness of this work of art. When this artist was constructing the alligator she did a good job of choosing the right objects to go in certain places, unlike the robot constructor. The consistent color of the objects she chose to insert into her project flowed very well, unlike the robot constructor. The alligator project is just a better overall project because it is visually more intricate and interesting to gaze at.

ReplyDeleteThe aligator head was much more successful because the use of similar broze/ copper, black, and gray colored computer/ machine parts puts the piece together. Where the robot looks like it was just old toys put together with out a theme or motif in mind.
The aligator head gives off an angry expression. Not because there is a plastic elbow piece angled downward above the eyes, but because of the bright, bronze, jagged key teeth and the pale white eyes that stand out from the overall dark color of the head and they sick out from the rest of the sculpture. This is like flashing off the dagger like teeth and showing, through his eyes, this "dont mess with me" look.
The aligator head was more effective because it used mainly bronze, black and gray colors where the robot used many different colors in all the different pieces. I like the aligators key teeth and white eyes which was explained in the last paragraph. I think there could have been more broze accents on top of the head, before the eyes and at the back of the head. This shiney bronze color draws your attention first and if there was more scattered through out the sculpture, my eyes would be drawn around the sculpture more other than just the teeth and the eyes.
The image on the top displaying the sculpture of what appears to be an alligator/crocodile head is quite effective. The different values of the pieces such as those for the teeth add interest and convey a tone of aggressiveness. The different values of the rest of the sculpture make the subject of a crocodile/alligator head easily noticed. The rough textures on the outside of the piece also aid in these effects.
ReplyDeleteThe image on the bottom of a what seems to be a sculpture of a robot is the less effective piece out of the two. The many different colors make the original glance interesting, but despite the red colors of the two arms, there is little emphasis on any one thing to unify it. The use of negative space within the robot, though, adds somewhat of junkyard kind of appeal, in the end contributing to the piece's interest level.
The successful use of the elements of value and texture in the top image lead to the completeness of the piece by the way they are balanced so as not to be too easy or too hard on the eyes. A viewer can look at this piece for a long time and notice a focal point at the eyes of the alligator/crocodile head. The focal point and the certain range of values bring unity and help to complete the work of art. The bottom image, on the other hand, lacks the unity that the top image has, making it less complete.
I think the top design is more effective.
ReplyDeleteThe metal materials were used very well to create the alligator. Colors blended together very well. Space was used effectively and there are no boring spots, everything has a place (ex. the mouth filled with the keys as teeth). The hard texture of the metal gives a hard and mean appearance to the alligator and his sharp teeth.
The bottom design was not as effective.
There is not one element in the design that I can actually pick out and focus on. It looks like a hodgepodge of materials thrown together to make a robot. Nothing is symmetrical and could definitely use some improvement. At least make the arms or legs out of the same materials.
As for the better piece, effective use of elements completes it. My attention is especially drawn to the teeth/keys. I think if it was just an open mouth it would lose some of the effectiveness and would not look finished. The design has asymmetrical balance working in its favor as well. If you cut the design in half it would look relatively the same. I think that is what makes the piece the more effective work of art overall.
I feel the student used texture in the first project very well by giving it a scaley look by using a rougher metal. They also use shape in an effective way by using pieces that really resemble an alligator's head's features. I think this project was the most effective between the two.
ReplyDeleteThe second project was not as effective for a couple reasons. First of all is that none of parts went together smoothly. The pieces the student used did not have a specific texture or shape pattern, it just looks like they just put it together. The color didn't really work either because again it was just kind of random.
The thing that most stood out to me in the first project was the use of the keys as teeth. It really looks like teeth from an animal like it. The overall texture again gives it the feeling of an alligator's skin and that really stood out. That is why the first one was the best.
The alligator head is much more effective then the robot because it utilizes the elements line and shape more effectively. It uses line and shape to make the facial expression effective. The robot does use line, but not as effectively as the alligator head does. The robot doesn't use the elements of art as consistently. Without line and shape the alligator head wouldn't be as successful as it would be without it. Shape makes the teeth and eyes very interesting and it really draws the viewer's eyes to those spots. I also think that the inconsistency of the colors in the robot make it less effective then it would be if it were made in all one color or if it had a particular pattern to it. The alligator head does use mostly dark and reflective colors so it also uses color too. With the combination of all these elements of art on the alligator head, it was able to successfully be effective.
ReplyDeleteThe more effective of the two sculptures that were made was the crocodile. The crocodile is more consistent with the materials used within it and the design.
ReplyDeleteWhat I think is a penguin was the less effective of the two. It was very inconsistent with the materials that were used and how they were used. The materials went form metal to random coloured plastics. The shapes of the parts used were all over the place and made the sculpture off balanced.
The crocodile on the other hand was very consistent it emphasises shape very well the materials fit the sculpture perfect and everything seemed to fit nicely.

ReplyDeleteThe sculpture of the alligator is more effective as a whole compared to the robot. It's consitant use of materials really makes the alligator head look realistic. It's the realistic quality that makes the art work effective. The reason why the robot isn't as effective for me is because the materials used just look random and out of place. It doesn't look cohesive like the alligator does.
Hallie did a really great job of working with texture in her work. That's what stands out to me and makes me feel like I am actually looking at an alligator's head. I love the use of the keys as teeth. I also think the texture of the medals used for the scales are perfect. it just adds to the overall realness and effectivenss of the work. The consistant use of color also adds to Hallie's work. the consistancy in the color makes you see the work as a whole and then you can notice the smaller more intricate parts of the work. I think the other work lacks in it's effectiveness due to the color choices. I would've liked to see the robot all one color. Either made of all metals, or reds or blues the combination makes the work look thrown together and sloppy in my opinion. It turns me off and when compared to the alligator and it is just not pleasing to look at. I don't see the work as a whole my eye just darts to the different colors as if they were different objects.
My favorite part of the alligator is how effectively she used the keys as teeth. The keys clearly share the same basic shape as a real tooth would but the rough edges makes me think of all the things an alligator would eat. I could totally see it tearing into a fish or whatever else alligators eat. It's this realness that makes the work effective. And that wouldn't be possible without the critical eye for detail.

ReplyDeleteI find the alligator sculpture more successful and complete rather than the robot sculpture. I say this because the alligator shows consistency in color and structure, along with vivid details that resemble a realistic alligator. When observing the alligator sculpture, it's not difficult to notice that the designer is highly creative, and that it took effort for the outcome of her sculpture to be as successful as it is. To mention specific examples of why the sculpture is an effective work of art, I would say that the presence of objects resembling each feature on a real alligator is what impressed me the most; such as using the keys as teeth. Overall, the sculpture is very interesting and well done.
I wouldn't say that the student who designed the robot did a bad job, but I would say that their focus on expressing elements of art wasn't there. The texture, color, and shape of the sculpture is completely inconsistent which immediately makes it ineffective. I think the designer's biggest mistake was using completely different objects to form the robot's arms and feet. After realizing that, it kind of became hard to look at.

ReplyDeleteI feel that the alligator sculpture is better then the robot sculpture because of its use of texture. All of the colors presented are very similar and would be the colors of an actual alligator. This sculpture is very successful in using texture to make the object seem like it is one thing rather than a bunch of other things thrown together
The sculpture of the robot does not effectively use texture to make the piece realistic. The items chosen for this sculpture do not make it seem like it is one thing but a lot of things thrown together. I think it would be nice if the robot was made up of only one medium, like metal or plastic. The way it is now is kind of confusing and I would not say it uses the element of texture to benefit it.
The use of keys in the alligator really makes the piece more successful. The use of similar colors also helps it to be a more realistic sculpture. The fact that it was able to successfully use the element of texture to make it seem more realistic makes it the better sculpture in my opinion.
I think the alligator sculpture is the most successful and the robot sculpture is the least successful. The alligator sculpture uses jagged shapes to match the aggressive nature of an alligator. The murky, tarnished metals that make up the piece show the natural characteristic of the piece. These colors give the sculpture a more unified feeling that allows it to be balanced. The texture used in this sculpture also express the idea of an alligator. The ragged texture resembles the scales that could be found on a real alligator. All in all these elements come together to make an interesting and successful piece of artwork.
ReplyDeleteThe sculpture of the robot is an good piece, but it lacks some of the fundamental elements of art that could have made it a great piece. The use of color in the artwork is scattered. No consistent color remains through the piece to give it a sense of unity. The robots use of shape is also greatly lacking. The large dominant central piece overwhelms the other smaller appendages. In addition to this the arms express to very different ideas. The arm on the left is a simple curved shaped expressing a calm feeling, while the arm on the right is a jagged shape expressing a frenzied feeling. This gives the artwork an unbalanced feeling. This lack of essential art elements causes the sculpture to be weak and not as strong of a piece as the first sculpture was.
The use of essential art elements in the first sculpture give it a sense of unity and balance. This sculpture also has certain eye-catching characteristics. The distinct color of the eyes that don't match any of the other colors in the sculpture grabs your attention. This acts as a focal point along with the teeth of keys that also acts as a very interesting piece. The teeth have a unique characteristic in that they run vertically rather than horizontally as the rest of the sculptures materials do. This linear aspect of art added with the distinct shiny trait of the teeth act as another main focal point. The essential art elements used in the alligator sculpture along with these interesting characteristics make the sculpture a very strong effective piece.

ReplyDeleteThe alligator sculpture is very effective in its use of the elements of art such as texture, space, and shape. This piece clearly uses texture well in the artists ability to use the metal pieces to look scaly and rough like an actual alligator. The artist used space well because she filled the sculpture completely and did not have too much empty space. Also she organized the empty spce in the mouth as a good porrayal of an open mouth of an alligator. Shape is also obviously used. You can tell this because the shape looks just like an alligator head and there is no question what the artist ws trying to make. Also the shapes of the keys in the sculpture replicate the jaggedness of the teeth. The element of color can also be used to explain the effectiveness of this piece. The color of the metal pieces are a murky, darker color set. This can relate to the fact that an actual alligator is dark color and swims through murky water. Individual interpretation of this proeject is goode because it compares what you think the artist is trying to say and what they actually are.
The second piece of art does not effectively use the elements of art. It uses color but color does not unify the art it actually seperates it and confuses the viewer because it is off balance with different colors on each side. Shape is also used in this projet but it does not improve the artwork it just makes it look like the student just made a sculpture out of anything that he could find.
In regards to the first and better sculpture, the elements of art used create a sense of unity and completeness. Shape, with the keys effectively portrays the jagged sharp look the artist was going for. Also, the keys unite the theme of the project which is murky metal objects. This theme that she used also displays the alligator in itself, a creature that swims through murky muddy water and is scaly and rough skinned. To me, the most eye cathcing aspect of the project is the white eyeballs and the key teeth. These both are well used resources and can improve the artwork's overall appearance. Without the teeth this project would lose a strong aspect of the design. This also goes for the eyes which would make the piece look very different. This first piece is overall more effective because it uses the elements of art to link many interesting and key features such as the teeth, together with the rest of the sculpture.
I believe the most successful piece is the top one. I feel their use of shape was very effective in making the piece look not only like an alligator but also a cohesive piece. They were very good with choosing what pieces to use, because of the shape and kind of object used you can immediately tell it is an animal head and the object represent what they were supposed to. The keys look like they could be teeth, the tanning goggles were a great choice for the eyes, and those pieces that were used for the nostrils really convey that they are nostrils. Another element that helped make this project stand out was its color. This person stuck with a neutral color scheme and I feel that is what really sets it apart from the bottom one. An alligator is pretty much one color, with the exception of its eyes and teeth. This person used all neutral colors and because of that it looks more authentic, which makes it a more effective piece. If the objects used were all different colors it wouldn’t look as nice and it would make it harder to figure out what it is.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom piece is not nearly as effective as the top because it lacks unity. Yes it is a robot but you can’t really find something that brings all the objects together and unifies it. If the shape of the object was similar it would make it better because there would be much less going on. Also with the many different colors the project doesn’t blend well because once again it lacks unity, I’m all for a pop of color but I feel multiple pops just don’t make it look like one solid piece.
The use of shape and color in the first project gives it what the second project lacks, which is unity. This looks like one solid piece, all the objects are similar, the shapes look like what they are actually trying to represent, and the similar colors make it actually look like what it is supposed to be. What sticks out about this project is the teeth, I thought it was so creative to use the different kinds of keys. The attention to detail and use of the design elements is what makes the top project more effective as a unified piece than the bottom.

I feel the first work of art, the alligator, was more successful. This is because the sculpture uses texture effectively. You can see the texture is consistently metal throughout, giving the sculpture a hard appearance to its texture. Also, texture can be seen in the holes and sharp edges of the metal, and also in the jagged edges of the teeth. By using a rough metal for skin and jagged keys for teeth, his is able to effectively reproduce the actual textures that would be found on an alligator in the wild.
ReplyDeleteThe second sculpture was not as effective as it failed to truly use any element of art. While looking at it, it is obvious it is a robot, but it looks inconsistent. The sculpture appears unbalanced, and seems to be made of random parts thrown together. Since none of the parts are similar, they look like they don't belong together, which is what makes the second sculpture less successful.
Through the consistent texture, the first sculpture has balance and some realism to it, which the second lacks completely. This makes the first far more successful. The thing about the first sculpture that really drew me in was the teeth, which being keys, seem to be the perfect piece to represent the sharpness of an alligator's teeth. Also the holes in the metal of the skin of the alligator just seem like such a perfect way to create the hard skin of the alligator. This makes the alligator the more effective art piece, as it truly looks like an alligator, and the pieces come together and seem to belong together unlike in the robot sculpture.
